Thank you for visiting our page! We are Brislington Welcome, a group of neighbours based in the Brislington area of Bristol who are working to bring a refugee family to our area because no-one should have to risk their lives to find a safe place to call home. We are working together to welcome a refugee family into Brislington through the Government's Community Sponsorship programme.
We will be doing this under the guidance of the Home Office, in cooperation with Bristol City Council, and in partnership with the Pickwell Foundation. We know that Brislington is a great place for a family to build a new life, so we have committed to raise funds, find and furnish affordable (private) accommodation, and to help the family to settle in when they arrive. From the moment the family land at the airport, Brislington Welcome will support them for at the least the next two years. This will include assistance with language learning, support with finding schools and navigating the health system, and orientation to the city of Bristol and to life in the UK.
The family will be selected by the UNHCR and the Home Office from a refugee camp on the basis of priority and most vulnerable (determined by a number of factors including extreme vulnerability of at least one member of the family through medical issues or disability). The Home Office conducts careful screening before they are granted leave to enter in the UK. Without safe and legal ways to reach safety like Community Sponsorship, refugees will continue dying to get here.
